Verano Place offers a variety of programs and activites throughout the year that support community health and safety, encourage interaction between neighbors, and build a sense of community. The Verano Gazette has the latest information about upcoming events.
Employment Opportunities:
Verano Place offers a number of opportunities for residents to work in their community:
Housing Assistants (students and spouses eligible)
Four Verano Place residents are hired for a one-year appointment as a Housing Assistant. Students and spouses can apply for these positions. The hiring process occurs in February/March and the postion begins in July. This is a compensated position.
Housing Assistant duties include:
- providing after-hours assistance to Verano residents
- developing, planning and implementing community activities
- welcoming new residents
- participating in Cyber Cafe operations
Verano Residents' Council - VRC (students and spouses eligible)
The Verano Residents' Council consists of five members of the Verano Place community, elected for a one-year term to represent and work on behalf of Verano residents. The Verano Residents' Council Election is held every May and the term of office begins in July. Student residents and other adult residents (i.e., spouses, domestic partners listed on your contract/lease) are eligible to vote. This is a compensated position.
Verano Residents Council responsibilities include:
- organizing community projects
- targeting community funds for programs and projects (from a $10,000 annual allocation)
- assisting residents through advocacy and referral
- promoting positive community involvement
- working in an advisory capacity with Verano staff to represent the interests of Verano residents

Cyber Cafe: (students only, except for the manager position)
Cyber cafe staff sign out equipment, provide access to the computer lab, fax and copy machines,and sell a variety of snacks and beverages. Cafe staff must be UCI students and they are hired throughout the year depending on need. This position pays minimum wage.
Residents (student or spouse) can apply for the Cafe Manager position. The hiring process occurs in February and March. The Cafe Manager serves for a one year appointment beginning in July. This is a compensated position.
Cyber Cafe Manager duties include:
- hiring and training staff
- ordering supplies
- maintaining equipment
- planning marketing and outreach activities
After School and Summer Camp Assistants (students only):
Assist professional staff in providing supervised care to school-aged children. Contact Betsy Franklin at 824-5383 if you are interested. This is a paid position.Application information can be obtained by contacting Gail Roy, Associate Director, Apartment Life, gfroy@uci.edu.
Verano Childrens' Playgroup:
The Verano Play Group is a weekly gathering of young children ages 0 - 5 years. Free play time, stories and various scheduled activities provide social interaction for both participants and their parents/caregivers. Parent participation is required. The Verano Play Group meets every Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. - noon.Verano Community Garden:
Organic gardening cooperatively organized by elected officials and members. For more information, contact veranogardens@yahoo.com.
