Strategic Planning

The Student Housing Strategic Plan was developed to further the departmental V ision, Mission & Values through a series of specific initiatives that will be implemented over the next five years. Many of the initiatives are already in progress. The overall goal of the plan is to ensure that we are setting a direction for the department that supports the University’s plans for expansion and educational excellence.

The Strategic Planning Leadership Team is comprised of 30 senior managers from Student Housing and will meet bi-monthly in order to guide the implementation processes on specific initiatives.

Our Vision for Student Housing is to serve as the “Gateway to Success” for new and continuing students at UCI and beginning Fall 2006, I believe the foundation for this vision lies in three major achievements for our organization over the past couple of years:

The construction of 4000 new on-campus bed spaces over the past three years. These include the 3,000 spaces in Vista Del Campo and Vista Del Campo Norte, the 880 spaces in Palo Verde and 200 new spaces in Arroyo Vista. The addition of these bed spaces will provide on-campus housing for 43% of UCI students enrolled for 2006-07.

The expansion of our guaranteed housing policies for new freshmen and new incoming graduate students. This Fall, new freshmen are being guaranteed housing for two-years and all new Ph.D. and MFA graduate students will receive a guarantee for one year less than their normative time to degree.

The development of the “First Year Initiatives” programs for new freshmen, transfers and graduate students. These programs are aimed at providing the highest levels of co-curricular enrichment and academic support within our residential communities in order to facilitate successful student transitions into the University community.

UCI is quickly moving from an identity as a “commuter school” to that of a residential campus, and we believe the Student Housing Strategic Plan will allow us to realize our full potential for supporting and complementing campus academic and student life goals.
