Update on Guaranteed Housing and Length of Stay (11/16/05)
The 2005 Ad Hoc Committee on Guaranteed Graduate Student Housing was charged with conducting further analysis to fully define the terms of a housing guarantee for all incoming doctoral and MFA students. The aim of the committee was to craft a housing policy that would maximize student access, equity, and educational benefit, and balance the campus’ commitment to both new and continuing students. The committee convened on August 12, 2005, and was composed of representatives from AGS (3), Grad Council (2), RGS (1) and Student Housing (4). On November 16, 2005, after completing its analysis, the committee submitted a recommendation to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Dr. Manuel Gomez. The recommendations of the committee are listed below.
- The committee unanimously recommends that UCI expand its guaranteed housing policy to all incoming fulltime Ph.D. and M.F.A. students starting in Fall 2006.
- The committee unanimously recommends that UCI set as its goal a policy that allows students placed through this program to remain in housing up to the currently published normative time for their program.
- The committee recommends that all current residents of Graduate and Family Housing be permitted to remain in residence through their normative time to degree provided they are making satisfactory academic progress.
- The committee urges UCI to aggressively explore strategies to supplement current on-campus housing resources to allow these recommendations to be implemented and sustained. Unless additional resources are secured to sustain a guarantee during a defined period, no general guarantee could be implemented and the University would have to continue with a priority placement program by offering housing to a specified number of highly recruited students for the normative time of their program.
- The committee recommends that the Chancellor create a standing committee on graduate student housing charged with making recommendations regarding future graduate student housing policies. The committee’s composition should be representative of campus constituencies and stakeholders including, but not necessarily limited to, Student Affairs, Graduate Council, Office of Graduate Studies, Capital Planning, and Associated Graduate Students, similar to the current Ad Hoc Committee on Graduate Student Guaranteed Housing.
