  2. Casino Night Info Man and Dayna
    • Wednesday, November 20, 2002 in Pippin @ 9 p.m.
    • Any Volunteers? Sign up after meeting by sign-in sheet.

  3. Roll Call: Mila Ream, Secretary

  4. Welcome guest speaker Darryl Brown, Associate Director of Operations in Middle Earth.
    • Darryl is in charge of the maintenance and custodial operations.
    • There are some updates on current activities in Middle Earth:
      • Construction in front of housing office: This is a front office expansion. It was supposed to be finished in the summer. It should be done during winter break. Residents should have received info emails about the noise levels. Currently there are two unusual office spaces to consolidate all professional staff. We’d like to bring Diane and Darryl´s managers all up by the rest of the professional staff. Darryl apologizes for the inconvenience.

      • 18C parking lot water problem: In 2004/05 we are supposed to have a parking structure. It is designed to be a five level parking structure. But first, soil sampling must be done. Must figure out soil composition. Residents should have received emails about soil sampling. Unfortunately, Monday morning, they nicked a sewer/water line, which resulted in gushing water. That portion in the North East end of 18C will be gone all of the week. Available Monday of next week. Parking situation will remain normal. No special dispensation. Construction will be from about 7 a.m. till 8 p.m. to work on the problem. They are trying to evaluate the damage. Sorry for the inconvenience.

    • Items that Marlen from Snowbourn asked Darryl to address:
      • Heavier shower curtains: Water is blowing away the curtains. Darryl will have Wayne look into weights/metal washers for bottom of curtain. He will let you know. Part of decision will be based on cost: $11.50 per shower curtain. Darryl buys a lot a year.

      • Cement walk paths to parking lots? Muddy paths by KUCI/engineering paths. This is something that Darryl must bring to parking department. Not really within his power. But Darryl understands. He too has fallen on his behind. Darryl asked the Parking Department about this situation and their response was: if steps were to be placed, it could create an issue of liability. Half of parking lot 18C and all of 18D/R will be structure.

        • Mila: Will involving handicap issues help accelerate process?
        • Darryl: Not necessarily. Not a huge matter. The slope is too high for a ramp. UCI is very high on image. Everything has to go through a design team. In the grand scheme, everything has to look nice and pretty.

        • Marlen from Snowbourn: Maybe wood blocks?
        • Darryl: wood deteriorates. Emergency Supplies for all of Middle Earth by Aldor/Rohan.

        • Carlos from Aldor: Stone walking steps?
        • Darryl: This would be an issue with irrigation. Soil becomes soft. Rotting. Safety issue. Needs to big enough for maintenance carts ("coneys").

      • More visible clocks in Brandywine. Darryl is not responsible for this. Res Dining is. Tim Egan or Dave, manager of Brandywine, are the people to talk to. Let the residents decide where the clocks will go.

      • Smoking areas/ash trays: Been an issue we’ve gone over in the past. Trying to figure out where to go with it. You shouldn’t be smoking closer than 15ft. Problem with that is once you are fifteen feet away from a one hall; you are closer to the other hall. Smoking is a social activity, so smokers won’t comply with "area". Ash urns need to be durable. In Mesa court they have them—very expensive, size of half of podium is 800 dollars, and also too heavy. Smokers move it to where they want it. They get rolled down the hill. Can’t bolt them down. He wants to challenge us by coming up with ideas to address this. Durability and Longevity is what Darryl is concerned with.

        • Lauren from Whispering Wood: trashcan next to ashtray?
        • Darryl: will talk to the Landscapers.

    • Other facilities concerns:
      • Karen: USPS mailboxes in BSC next to stamp machine? Darryl: Province of Post office. He’ll pass it on to Marla. Maybe a bin can be put there, to be given to front office.
      • Darryl: Problem with that is the idea of being responsible for outgoing mail.

      • Karen: Moving stamp machine to housing office?
      • Darryl: will take that into consideration.

      • Carlos from Aldor: Recycling Bins by every hall? Funds donated to charity?
      • Darryl: Same concern last year. Seven dispersed throughout, five added, total of 12. Lots of discussion over this. The same regime is in power. Can’t deal with moving them.
