How-To: Changes required after 11/8/2006 RMS upgrade to RMS 5.3

Problem:

RMS verion 5.2.x and earlier used Microsoft´s Java Virtual Machine (MSJVM) to run and display customized reports within the web browser.  They have removed this dependency in version 5.3 and now use the Sun Java runtime. Because of this change, users will need to remove tThis issue will not be resolved until we upgrade to RMS 5.3.x.  MSJVM is known to have security issues and should be removed from systems.

Resolution:

The resolution is a two step process. First, it requires the removal of the MSJVM from the Windows 2000/XP machine. Secondly, it requires the installation of the Sun Java runtime.

 

Please download then execute the installer for each step. You may wish to right-click and select save as; then save the file to your desktop to run. Do one step at a time.
  • Step 1: Download, Unzip, and Run MSJVM Removal Tool . Run this utility to remove the MS JVM from your Windows machine. This is absolutely necessary.
  • Step 2: Download and Install Sun Java installer.
  • Step 3: Verify the Sun Java setting within Internet Explorer.
    1. Open Internet Explorer
    2. Click on the Tools menu item
    3. Select the Internet Options sub-item.
    4. Select the Advanced tab.
    5. Scroll down the list and locate the "Java (Sun)" grouping.
    6. Verify that the "Use JRE ....." item is CHECKED

    You should also verify the Java Control panel setting:
    1. Click on START button on your Windows task bar.
    2. Select Control Panel (or Settings then Control Panel) menu item.
    3. Select the Java control item.
    4. Click on the Advanced tab.
    5. Expand the "<APPLET> tag support" grouping.
    6. Verify that the "Internet Explorer" item is CHECKED (see image below.)


Proceed to login to RMS. If you have access, visit the Customized Reports and Preview a report. You will need to click on the browser window to activate the report control.
