How-To: Configure Your Email Client for Out-going Authentication
Problem:
User email accounts hosted on the Student Housing Exchange Email server now requires out-going SMTP authentication. If you receive an error message when trying to send an email that states "relaying not allowed" or "authentication required," chances are you need to proceed with the resolution listed below.
Purpose:
The authentication is a security related enhancement that prevents our server from being used as an open-relay. "Spammers" typically use open-relay mail servers to send out mass emailings. Requiring authentication helps Housing IT ensure that all emails are being sent by legitimate users.
Resolution:
The solutions outlined below are applicable to Microsoft Outlook and Qualcomm Eudora only. If you use an alternate email client, you will need to refer to the user's manual for that product for instructions.
Microsoft Outlook Users:
- Open Outlook and click on the Tools menu item.
- Click on the E-mail Accounts sub-item.
- Click on View or change existing e-mail accounts.
- Look at the Type column for your housing email account. If it says "Exchange" there is no need for you to proceed with this How-To.
- If it says something different for the Type, select your housing email account and click on Change.
- Click on More Settings.
- Select the Outgoing Server tab.
- Make sure the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication item is checked. (see below; note: this window may appear differently depending on your version of Outlook)
- Ensure that Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.

Qualcomm Eudora Users:
- Open Qualcomm Eudora and click on the Tools menu item.
- On the left window-pane, RIGHT-click on the <Dominant> account item and select Properties.
- On the Generic Properties tab, make sure the Authentication allowed item is checked. (see below; note: this window may appear differently depending on your version on Eudora)
