Peer Tutoring in Writing and Library Research

Having trouble writing papers? Need help brainstroming ideas or editing what you've written? Don't know how to search for articles at the libraries? Come see a trained peer tutor to help you. Best of all, this service is free!

Topics vary and include time management, study skills, and textbook reading. Led by Olivia Chan, an educational specialist, from LARC, free workshops take place on Wednesdays in Middle Earth.

Classes

Middle Earth offers unique opportunities to enroll in for credit classes held in residential classrooms and hall living rooms. Humanities Core and University Studies discussion sections, cluster classes, and Freshman Seminars taught by faculty are all offered in Middle Earth.

CLUSTER CLASSES - Fall 2009

Health Leaders Certification Class (1.3 units)

Instructor: Jasmine Blackburn, Health Education Center

Wednesdays, 3:00-5:00 p.m. (Weeks 3, 5, 7, and 9), 6:00-8:00 p.m. (Weeks 4, 6, and 8)

Health Education Center (Student Center)

Students will learn about health promotion strategies that impact the wellness of the Middle Earth community. Students who participate in at least four sessions will receive a Health Leader Certificate through the Health Education Center. Students will gain knowledge of health issues facing college students including alcohol, nutrition, sexual health, tobacco, stress, and other issues.

Come join your peers to discuss issues of health and wellness and make an impact in your community in this highly interactive class. Another incentive? Earn 1.3 units! If you're interested, stop by the Middle Earth Housing Office to sign-up for this class as space is limited. Add cards will be signed on the first day of class.

Keys to Academic Success in Postsecondary Education (1.3 units)

Instructor: Daniel K. Park, Middle Earth Housing

Tuesdays (beginning Week 2), 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Gandalf's Classroom

This is a highly interactive class that focuses on helping first-year students successfully make the transition to UC Irvine. Topics include: strategies for success in the first-year and beyond; leadership development; cultivating relationships with faculty and staff; overview of campus resources; learning and communication skills; and career development.

Come join your peers to learn about how to succesfully make the transition  in this highly interactive class. Another incentive? Earn 1.3 units! FRESHMAN SEMINARS - Fall 2009

Why People Believe in Weird Things (Uni Stu 3, Course code: 87564)
Instructor: Dr. Richard Symanski (Ecology & Evolutionary Biology)
Mondays, 10:00-10:50 a.m.

Gandalf’s Classroom

An examination of why people believe "weird" and strange things, why this is so, and how we can try to understand whether or not their beliefs are rational. The seminar examines various reasoning fallacies, and the scientific method.

Professor Symanski teaches evolutionary biology and introductory ecology, and during the summer writing for engineers.

Mind, Meditation, and Dream-state (Uni Stu 3, Course code: 87576)
Instructor: Professor Anthony Kubiak (Drama)
Tuesdays, 12:00-12:50 p.m.

Gondolin/Snowbourn Multipurpose Room   

Introduction to basic meditation techniques, with the aim of developing a daily practice of meditation and mindfulness. We will also look at meditation and visionary practices in other cultures, and keep dream journals.

Professor Kubiak is professor of drama. He practices meditation regularly and is currently engaged in research on meditational and visualization practices, including shamanic practices, visionary practice, and performance.
